How to wash a car at home, in the order that keeps the paint safe

A car wash has an order, and the order is most of what separates a clean car from a scratched one. Wheels before paint. Roof before sills. Rinse before anything touches the surface. The towel last, and only on paint that is already wet and clean. The nine steps below are that order, with what each one is for.

The reasons behind the order, and the products that should never go near paint, are on DIY car wash tips. If the address has no tap or no space to do this, our home service car wash comes to the car with its own water.

What you need

  • Two buckets, with a grit guard in the rinse bucket at least
  • A car shampoo, which cleans without stripping the wax
  • A wash mitt for the paint, and a separate mitt or brush for the wheels
  • A hose, or enough water in containers to rinse the whole car twice
  • One or two microfibre drying towels, kept for paint and nothing else
  • A glass cloth, and a spray detailer or drying aid if you have one

None of it is specialist. The two things worth buying rather than improvising are the mitt and the drying towel, because a sponge and a bath towel are where most scratches come from.

The nine steps, in order

  1. 1. Park in the shade and let the panels cool. A panel you cannot rest a hand on will dry shampoo before you can rinse it. If there is no shade, wash early or late and hose the car down first to take the heat out of the metal.
  2. 2. Wheels and tyres first, with their own bucket. They are the dirtiest part of the car and the brake dust on them is abrasive. Doing them first means the splash lands on paint that has not been washed yet, and their mitt never goes near the paint.
  3. 3. Rinse the whole car from the roof down. Loosen, do not scrub. The rinse carries off the dust, the loose grit and the ash that would otherwise be dragged across the surface by the mitt. Give the lower panels and the wheel arches the most time.
  4. 4. Two buckets, roof first, one panel at a time. Mitt into the shampoo, onto the panel in straight lines with light pressure, then into the rinse bucket and rubbed on the grid before it goes back to the shampoo. Rinse each panel before starting the next so nothing dries. Why the two buckets matter is on the tips page.
  5. 5. Lower doors, bumpers and sills last. They carry the road film and the grit. If the rinse water has gone brown by the time you reach them, tip it out and refill. Grit in the rinse bucket is grit on the way back to the paint.
  6. 6. Rinse from the top, and finish with the hose running free. A final pass with the nozzle off and the hose held at the top edge of each panel makes the water sheet off in one piece, taking most of the remaining droplets with it. Less water on the panel means less work for the towel.
  7. 7. Dry with a microfibre towel, patting or in one direction. Lay the towel flat and draw it across, or pat. No circles, and no drying towel on dirt you missed: rinse and wash that spot instead. Then the door jambs, the fuel flap and the mirror housings, which hold water and release it onto the dry paint later.
  8. 8. Glass last, with its own cloth. Inside and out. Glass is where streaks show, and a cloth that has been on the paint carries shampoo and wax onto it. The inside of the windshield collects a film from the plastics and clears with a glass cleaner and two cloths, one wet and one dry.
  9. 9. Mats out, a vacuum, and wax if it is due. Shake the mats, vacuum the carpet and seats, wipe the plastics with a damp cloth. If the water on the paint has stopped beading, the wax has gone and this is the moment to put it back, on a panel that is clean, cool and dry.

Where it goes wrong

Three places, nearly always. The wash is done at noon and the shampoo dries on the panel. One bucket is used for everything and the grit goes round and round. The drying towel is used to take off dirt the wash missed, and that is the moment the swirl marks go in. Each of the three has its own section on the tips page.

How often to repeat all this depends on where the car sleeps, and the intervals are on how often to wash your car. For a car that is only dusty, a spray and a towel can stand in for a wash, within the limits on waterless car wash.

Or have the crew do it at your address

The same order, with the water, the buckets and the crew arriving at wherever the car is parked. Read what our home service car wash covers, then put the address in the form. If there is no tap at the address, say so, and the crew brings the water.
