The exterior side of the detail
- Paint
- The wash lifts off the dirt and grime. Polishing then works on what is underneath it, the fine scratches and the dullness that a wash alone leaves behind.
- Glass
- Windows and mirrors, cleaned so headlights behind you stop smearing across the glass.
- Wheels and trim
- Brake dust comes off the rims and the plastic trim is cleaned down with everything else, because a polished car with grey wheels still looks half done.
- Wax
- Wax goes on last and it is the part that lasts. It sits between your paint and the sun, and it is the reason rain beads up and runs off instead of drying where it fell.
Auto detailing, car detailing, or just a detail
Shops here advertise auto detailing, car detailing and plain detailing more or less interchangeably. The names move around; what varies between one shop and the next is how far the work actually goes.
A wash takes off what has settled on the car since the last one.
